In automotive manufacturing, full-vehicle dimensional inspection is essential for verifying vehicle performance, assembly quality, and production consistency. Blackboxcv's 3D scanning technology enables automotive manufacturers to capture detailed vehicle geometry and identify dimensional deviations more efficiently than conventional inspection methods. This case study from Vietnam shows how Blackboxcv's automotive 3D scanning solution supports faster, data-driven vehicle quality control.
The Vietnamese customer has extensive experience in automotive manufacturing and a well-established market presence. As competition intensified, the customer required a full-vehicle inspection solution that could capture complete three-dimensional data and support accurate dimensional analysis across the vehicle body and assembled components.
Traditional inspection methods were limited by slower data collection and insufficient coverage for complex vehicle geometries. The customer therefore needed a technology that could rapidly acquire full-vehicle 3D data, measure dimensional deviations, and provide usable analysis results for production and quality teams. Blackboxcv's automotive 3D scanning solution was selected to address these requirements.
To meet the inspection requirements, the customer selected the Blackboxcv Extr Series handheld blue-laser 3D scanner. The handheld scanner is used to capture vehicle geometry from multiple angles, allowing operators to scan the exterior and other accessible areas of a fully assembled vehicle without relying on fixed-position measurement equipment.
The Extr Series scanner provides a stated scanning accuracy of up to 0.02 mm under the applicable scanning mode, calibration status, surface conditions, and test environment.
Blackboxcv's inspection software processes the captured point-cloud data and enables engineers to measure key vehicle dimensions, including body profiles, panel alignment, gap-and-flush conditions, and other specified geometric features. The measured results can be compared with nominal CAD data, reference dimensions, or predefined inspection tolerances to determine whether the vehicle and its components meet the required assembly criteria.
When a deviation is detected, the software generates a visual inspection result that identifies the deviation location, direction, and magnitude. The software can also produce inspection reports for quality documentation, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action follow-up.
This workflow allows the customer to locate dimensional and assembly issues using measurable 3D evidence rather than visual judgment alone. The inspection scope may include body-in-white components, exterior panels, doors, hoods, bumpers, and other accessible vehicle structures, depending on the customer’s inspection plan.
The Blackboxcv Extr Series 3D scanner provides the Vietnamese customer with a workflow that combines handheld data acquisition, high-accuracy dimensional measurement, and software-based deviation analysis. The resulting 3D inspection data supports faster identification of assembly and dimensional issues, while the visual reports give production and quality teams a clear basis for corrective action.
As a result, the vehicle production cycle has been shortened, helping the customer strengthen its competitiveness in the market.
Moving forward, Blackboxcv will continue to develop its expertise in 3D scanning technology and provide high-quality 3D scanning solutions to more customers. By doing so, Blackboxcv aims to support the automotive industry in achieving higher standards of quality and advancing toward more efficient, intelligent, and reliable manufacturing.
